An introduction to the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site

The Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site is one of the world's most significant prehistoric landscapes, home to some of Britain's most iconic ancient monuments. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, the landscape encompasses Stonehenge, Avebury and hundreds of associated archaeological sites that provide a unique insight into Neolithic and Bronze Age life. Managed through a partnership of organisations dedicated to protecting, conserving and sharing this remarkable heritage, the site attracts visitors, researchers and historians from across the globe.

The Brief

The WHS approached Resolution to reimagine its online presence. The brief was to create a modern, accessible, and inspiring digital home that reflects the timeless significance of the historic site, while establishing a distinctive brand look and feel that feels sympathetic to its heritage.

The new identity and website needed to support the WHS’s mission to inform, educate, and engage, bringing the story and significance of the site to life for modern audiences.

Our Approach

We began with a discovery phase, working closely with their team to understand their audiences, objectives, heritage, and content. This informed a distinctive visual direction that respects the character of the historic site while giving the brand a fresh, contemporary presence.

We then carried this direction through into the website, focusing on accessibility and clarity, immersive storytelling, and flexibility for the future.

The Result

The redesigned site delivers a cleaner, more modern experience that reflects the significance of a UNESCO World Heritage Site while remaining warm, accessible, and community-focused.

The result is a digital experience that bridges the ancient and the modern, celebrating the enduring legacy of Stonehenge and Avebury while giving the WHS a distinctive visual identity and a platform for its forward-looking vision. Visit the website.

We worked with Resolution Design to develop a new website for the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site (WHS). The website is a modern, accessible, and inspiring digital home for the WHS.

We found the experience of working with the team very positive. They were responsive, flexible and demonstrated a clear understanding of our needs and ambitions for the project. The website has been received very positively and will be an important resource for visitors, students, residents and partners.
